Background, Early and Educational Life

 Olubankole Wellington (born 27 March 1981, known by the stage name Banky W he is a Nigerian singer, rapper and actor. Banky W was born in New York of the United States to Nigerian parents.  In 1986 Banky w‘s parent decided returned back to Nigeria for stay. It was gathered that he started singing at a young age in the church choir.

 Olubankole schooled in Lagos for his primary and secondary (Corona School for his primary education and Home Science Association Secondary School for his secondary education) education and returned to further his tertiary education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York on a scholarship and studied Engineering.

Career Life

 Banky W started singing at a young age in the church choir. Banky W, came to limelight when he won the Albany Idol competition and late he co-founded the record label E.M.E (Empire Mates Entertainment)in 2002 while still studying at New York. Banky W been living in the United state until 2009.

In 2003,he release his first official Extended play “Undeniable” (EP) with his label E.M.E which was was sold on the internet and from the trunk of cars. The success of his marketing strategy got Fox 23 News New York to cover him and this got him a distribution deal with Trans World; one of North America’s largest music distributors. The song later became one of the top selling independent record, which won Banky W the 2003 R&B/Soul Artist of the Year at the Urban Independent Music Awards.

In 2005, after release song single in the previous year and he decided to released his debut studio album “Back in the Building’ . The album was supported by award winning track My Regret was a huge success.

In 2006, he won the US Songwriting award in 2006, the Nigerian Entertainment award for the R & B/Soul artist of the year and in 2007, the International single of the Year for his song “My Regret”.

In 2008, he released his second studio album “Mr Capable” of ehich “Capable” whch is the number of studio album got in Best international single of the year year prior to the album.  Banky W is founded the “I am Capable” Scholarship fund which provides tuition, room, and board for indigent undergraduates who met the foundation’s requirement. He is also in the fore front of the Light UpNigeria project aimed at achieving steady electricity power supply in Nigeria.

In 2009, he after relocated to Nigeria and he signed Niyola, Shaydee, Skales and Wizkid to his label E.M.E. He released his third studio album “The W Experience” on 14th December 2009.

In 2010 to late 2012 he was very busy mining the artist he had in his label. During the time Banky W made all his artist super star Niyola, Shaydee, Skales and Wizkid were all known to the world which all are still making rounds till date. although most left the label at close of 2013.

In 2013, A day after Valentine, he launched his new album “R&BW” with a concert tagged the “Grand Love Concert” at the Civic Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos, which featured several other artistes including Iyanya, Waje and more. The first two singles from the album are “Lowkey” and “Yes/No” which was an anthem to lovers seeking for love. As late 2013 Banky W was already fading out of modern music.

He continued singer and in 2016 he acted in very popular movie “The Wedding Party” a Nigerian romantic comedy drama film and a year later the part 2 of the film was produced after he got married to Adesua Etomi “The Wedding Party 2”.

In 2017, Banky W took part in the initialing of a monumental heirloom, the Philosophers Legacy.

Banky W officially Joins Politics

On 11 November 2018, Banky W declared his intention to run for a seat in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, representing Lagos’ Eti-Osa Federal Constituency. He announced that he would run under the Modern Democratic Party, formed in 2017.

Banky W got engaged to Adesua Etomi Welligthon in February 2017. They both got traditionally married on 19 November at Landmark Event Centre in Lagos after dating for a year and half with the family and a lot of their friends from the music industry in attendance.  Court Wedding on 20 November and on 25 November (2017) they had the White Wedding in Cape Town, South Africa.
